A set of 10 postcards reimagining Anna May Wong as the leading lady in iconic film roles, created by Katie Gee Salisbury—author of Not Your China Doll: The Wild and Shimmering Life of Anna May Wong.
Anna May Wong was Hollywood's first Chinese American movie star. Born in 1905, Wong started working in Hollywood films as an extra at the age of 13 and played her first leading role at 17 in The Toll of the Sea, the second Technicolor film ever made. Despite her breakout role in Douglas Fairbanks's Arabian Nights blockbuster, The Thief of Bagdad, Wong soon learned that the roles available to her in Hollywood were limited by her race. In 1928, she left for Europe where she starred in films in Germany and England, becoming the toast of the Continent. Three years later, she returned triumphantly to Hollywood. Yet she would have to seek opportunities abroad several more times throughout her career due to the racism and sexism she faced as an Asian American actress.
What if Anna May Wong hadn’t been limited by Hollywood’s racism and was instead cast in some of the most memorable leading lady roles in film history? This AI art project seeks to reimagine Wong in films she never appeared in—but could have—had producers and the censors been more enlightened. And since this is an exercise in wish fulfillment, I’ve also re-envisioned Wong in fan favorites and recent blockbusters, too.
